Charity, or paropkaar, is a noble act in every religion. It means helping others and doing good deeds. In Hinduism, charity holds a special place. It is believed that by donating, one can turn their bad karma into good and wash away their sins. The Hindu scriptures say that when you give to someone in need, their blessings can remove problems from your life. Even in Vedic astrology, it is advised to donate according to the planets in your horoscope to gain their favor.
Why Cow Donation (Godan) is Special
Donating a cow is called Mahadaan—the greatest donation. It is said that giving a cow can reduce your sins and bring you virtue. Many people donate cows after a family member passes away. This is because, in Hindu beliefs, the soul of the deceased has to cross the Vaitarni River on its journey to heaven or hell. A donated cow helps the soul cross this river safely.
Rules for Godan
Donate Once in Your Life: The scriptures say every person should donate a cow at least once in their lifetime.
Choose the Right Brahmin: The cow should be given to a Brahmin who is healthy, not divyang (disabled), and capable of performing rituals like Yagya Havan. The Brahmin’s family should be prosperous, and his wife should be alive.
The Cow’s Condition: The cow should be healthy, able to give milk, and have shiny horns and hooves. Never donate an old or weak cow.
How to Donate a Cow
Before donating, the cow is decorated because it is believed that gods reside in every part of the cow:
Brahma and Vishnu are in the horns.
Shiva is in the head.
Ganga is in the cow’s urine, and Yamuna is in its dung.
During the donation, place sesame seeds, ghee, and milk in a bronze vessel and put it near the cow’s tail. This completes the ritual.
Best Time for Godan
While cow donation can be done anytime, the most auspicious time is during Pitru Paksha. This period is dedicated to ancestors, and donating a cow during this time can bring their blessings. You can donate for your ancestors or for yourself.
Gau Tirth Dham, Hariom Ashram Dehradun
If you cannot keep a cow at home, you can still help. At Gau Tirth Dham, Hariom Ashram Dehradun, you can adopt a cow, bull, or calf. You can donate for their care—whether for a month, a year, or a lifetime. This gaushala protects and cares for abandoned, sick, and stray cows. Most of these cows are no longer able to give milk. The gaushala is run by saints, and your donation helps save these sacred animals.
Mantra for Godan:
“Gau Daan, Maha Daan”
(Donating a cow is the greatest donation.)
By donating a cow, you not only help the animal but also earn spiritual merit. It’s a way to connect with your roots and follow the path of dharma.
Remember: “Daan se punya aur punya se shanti milti hai.”
(Charity brings virtue, and virtue brings peace.)
